Celebrating Mother’s Day in Nicaragua – May 30, 2026
Dear Friends of the Clinic,
This year, as families across Nicaragua prepare to celebrate Día de las Madres on Saturday, May 30, 2026, we at the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic want to pause and honor the mothers who are the heart of every family – and the heart of the communities we serve.
Mother’s Day in Nicaragua, known in Spanish as Día de las Madres, is a cherished public holiday and one of the most beloved cultural celebrations of the year. Unlike in the United States, where Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday of May, in Nicaragua it is always observed on May 30.
The date honors Casimira Sacasa de Sacasa, the mother of a former Nicaraguan president, whose legacy of compassion inspired the national holiday. It is a day filled with joyful tradition. Many families begin the celebration before sunrise with las mañanitas – heartfelt serenades sung outside a mother’s window, often accompanied by mariachi or local trios. Children craft handmade gifts, recite poems, and perform in school programs in the days leading up to the holiday. Homes fill with flowers – especially carnations and roses – and families gather around a special meal of traditional dishes such as nacatamal, gallo pinto, and indio viejo, often followed by a slice of tres leches cake. It is a day of music, food, gratitude, and togetherness.
Mothers Are at the Center of Our Mission
Many members of our own team are mothers themselves – including our beloved Medical Director, Dr. Hazel Ruiz, who welcomed a beautiful baby girl into her family last year. Each day, our staff works alongside mothers across the region, providing well-woman checks, prenatal and postnatal care, preventative screenings, nutritional guidance, and health education.
For more than 20 years, the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic has stood beside Nicaraguan moms as a trusted partner in their families’ health and well-being.

Some of our most devoted supporters have come to think of themselves as Madrinas – godmothers – sponsoring a child, or even an entire family, with monthly support for healthcare, education, and nutrition. For as little as $25 a month, you can become a Madrina (or Padrino) to a child in need, providing life-changing care and opportunity. If you – or someone you know – would like to learn more, please reach out to us, or visit our website to read about our Padrino Program. Click here to donate.

Wishing you Peace and Happiness,
