Queridos Amigos,

I put together a new, short video for you. It’s about a proven investment you’ve probably never considered…

And why, as the sun rises over the nearby mountains, people in this community line up, patiently waiting outside this clinic, occasionally for hours. You’ll see how, as a result of what’s happening there, lives are transformed.

Not just for those who live nearby, but for those who visit to volunteer, or need its services.

Please just take a few minutes to watch a short video on a vital project that has inspired many of us here to get involved - financially or otherwise…

We Can’t Do it Without You

It takes big hearts and generous donations to fulfill our promise to the Nicaraguan community who rely on us so much for basic and emergency healthcare.

Locals and tourists alike visit the clinic, which provides 24-hour combined on-site and on-call care every day of the week. They’re treated for a wide variety of issues, from a simple cut to the birth of a child.

Before the clinic opened in 2004, many mothers gave birth in their own homes, if they didn’t have the time, money, or transportation to go to the closest hospital, 45 minutes away over bumpy dirt roads.

The current budget for 2013 is $190,000. This is very little money for the impact the clinic has on the surrounding communities… from disease prevention, immunizations, healthy babies being born, to life-saving emergency care. This small budget includes money for building supplies and maintenance of the clinic building and grounds… medical equipment and supplies, from operating tables down to cotton swabs… a variety of medicines and vaccinations… community outreach programs, volunteer work, and educating the locals on how to better take care of themselves… running our ambulance, and salaries for our hardworking doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians and staff working to keep the clinic open 24/7.

We would like to expand our facilities and add two more rooms for mini-surgery and medical examinations. The second room would also afford patients more privacy during gynecological exams and other procedures. And one day we hope to add another building to our grounds, as the need for space is great. (Please click here to donate.)

With the many needed medicines, the low-cost to free care, the additional medical staff we’ve added, and maintenance on the facility, we’re in constant need of operating funds just to stay open.

And it’s thanks to your donations that we’re able to do even a fraction of what we do. Every penny you donate helps in a big way.

Our hard-working doctors and nurses have helped turn the Roberto Clemente-Santa Ana Clinic into a model healthcare facility for the area. And we want to continue to add to that and make it so much more.

The region is growing, and so are
the demands on the Clinic

We’ve expanded beyond medical care to offer health education, and educational supplies to the residents of the area.

Prevention is the most effective healthcare, and we strive to provide that “missing link” so often found in other clinics of this type: simple education.

From its inception, the Roberto Clemente-Santa Ana Clinic has held regular education programs, including seminars on breast self-examination, prenatal care, nutrition, how to create better sanitary conditions at home, and other preventative healthcare issues.

But what is probably the most important part of our health education programs is our outreach to the youth.

Boys and girls ages 12 to 20 meet regularly with Nurse Miranda to talk openly and honestly about issues facing young people, to promote well-being in the mind and body, and sustained health.

In addition, Dr. Flores visits local schools each month, passing out donated supplies of toothbrushes, books, pencils, and paper to the children.

We’ve received many requests for help and sponsorship from children, their parents, and young adults at the beginning of their careers. They work hard to further their lives and education, but in many cases children and young adults aren’t going to school because they can’t afford it, or are quitting because they need to work to support themselves and their families. And so the need for sponsorship is great. Please click here to donate.

A Little Goes a Long Way…

And a lot… well, that’s life-changing. Here’s an example of how your generous donation would help:
  • $250 will help in adding much-needed medicines to our pharmacy for people who might otherwise never have access to them, plus other crucial medical equipment that might mean the difference between life and death.
  • $500 can greatly help us with expand our outreach program and child sponsorship programs, to help educate the community.
  • $1,000 can greatly help us expand our facilities to create the new rooms we need, for OBGYN, pediatric care, and a small surgical room for visiting doctors. Please click here to donate.
Every dollar helps. The clinic simply cannot survive without your donations.

Unfortunately, charitable giving has experienced a downturn in the last year, especially in developing countries, due to the recession. The people in the nearby villages are worried that our doors will close like so many local businesses have had to do. But we've reassured them we have a long-term commitment to improving healthcare and education in the region and we’re determined to be there for them always.

But we need donations to realize that commitment. We don’t have any large benefactors or grant money, we’re still completely dependent on individual donations.

Imagine not being able to get the regular, routine medical attention you need. Imagine suffering from a chronic illness that requires medicine but not being able to get it, or even know it exists. Imagine you or your wife, sister, or daughter, not being able to give birth in a clean and safe environment. Imagine having trouble breathing and no access to oxygen.

Imagine working so hard to better your life, but because of where you were born it’s next to impossible.

In Nicaragua, there are no 911 emergency services, so people often must travel several hours, sometimes on foot, to get to the Clinic.

If you think of all that we really do have in our lives – the basic necessities for living healthy, comfortable lives - you’ll probably think as I do, that we’re so lucky to be in a position to help those less fortunate.

Because even with all the economic woes our country and we as individuals may be facing, it’s nothing compared to what some citizens of Nicaragua have seen their whole lives.

You Can Easily Improve One Person’s Life,
or the Lives of an Entire Family

That’s why I’m coming to you. Please take a moment out of your day to think of this community and do what you can to help.

Since the Roberto Clemente-Santa Ana Health Clinic is recognized as exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, donations are 100% tax deductable.

With a donation of $5,000 or more, we would like to place your name on a plaque at the Clinic, and send you a special handmade gift from Nicaragua as our thank you. And, we’d also like to thank you for your generosity with two free nights at the nearby Rancho Santana Resort on the stunning Pacific coast (www.ranchosantana.com). If you’d like, you could visit the Clinic while you’re there, to see exactly how much good your donation is doing.

No matter how much you give, your donation will have a tremendous impact on the thousands of people who visit the clinic each year. It will give newborn babies a better chance at life… it will give the elderly the care and relief they need to live out their lives in peace and comfort… and help everyone in between in big and small ways.

Simply put: Your donation saves lives. Please click here to donate.

My Sincere Thanks,

Dear Friends of the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic,

Happy May! We hope that this message finds you well and enjoying springtime. The month of April was very fruitful for us, so we have exciting news and updates about our volunteer abroad program. We were fortunate enough to have two groups of volunteers visit the clinic: a group of public health students from George Washington University and a brigade of doctors and specialists from Med4Nicaragua. Read the complete stories below, and please continue to support and follow us in our mission!

GWU's Students Making a Difference in Nicaragua

Outreach
Recently, GWU's Global Health Network participated in an alternative Spring Break trip to the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic, a non-profit based in Nicaragua with offices in Baltimore. The group was comprised of 21 students, along with a pediatric medical resident from Children's Hospital. The Clinic serves as a valuable asset in the rural area of southwest Nicaragua, where continuous access to electricity and safe drinking water is still rare. The Clinic makes an impact beyond health care services; it facilitates sustainable change by doing public health outreach at schools and in the community. They also offer volunteer opportunities to students, as well as professionals.

The students visited 6 different schools, distributing 300+ deworming pills, and educated children through 'charlas,'interactive health lessons. These charlas consisted of stories, songs, and much more on topics like nutrition, hand-washing, hygiene, and diabetes.

Outreach
Furthermore, the children were encouraged to answer questions and received prizes, including toothbrushes, pencils, and teddy bears. The volunteer team also purified 16 water wells, teaching local students to encourage sustainability. Additionally, the team participated in trash pick-up and medicine distribution. Other students helped paint the storage room of the clinic. Another volunteer, a pediatric resident, saw more than 30 patients, helping the clinic's resident physician, Dr. Flores. Volunteers also helped the clinic's pharmacist, facilitating the organization of the storage room. Finally, volunteers assisted in coordinating a children's fair, which included piñatas and prizes, leaving the children cheerful and the volunteers satisfied.

Med4Nicaragua Team Joins Our Medical Volunteer Program Abroad

A team of medical professionals with Med4Nicaragua traveled to the rural community of Limon in southwest Nicaragua to volunteer their time, expertise, and services to local patients of the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic.

The group consisted of general surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesiologists, and an obstetrician/gynecologist surgeon. Together, the team performed a total of 32 surgeries throughout their stay.

Med4Nicaragua

The team, lead by Dr. Christine Brody, co-founder and team leader of Med4Nicaragua, and Dr. Adam Fierer, had the opportunity to interact with local surgeons at the Rivas Hospital, as well as The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic's medical team in Nicaragua.

Testimonial: "Juan, it was a real pleasure to have connected with the RC Clinic. I realized a lifelong connection that I had to Clemente, and perhaps it gave me some closure over his last heroic deed and tragic death. I hope that we can continue to help the clinic thrive and grow in the years to come. I would love to spend more time at the clinic doing and teaching surgery once the OR dream is realized. I am honored to have been a part of it, and thank you all for what you have done there and will do in the future." – Adam Fierer

Our volunteer program in Nicaragua is one the most complete and dynamic opportunities for medical professionals who want to travel with a purpose. We offer a huge range of activities, from interacting with patients to teaching young students and members of the community about public health issues. When you volunteer abroad in Nicaragua, you will have the pleasure of interacting with local residents of all ages who are in need, from children to seniors.

Since 2004, the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic (http://nicaclinic.org) has served as a positive agent for change, providing free, low-cost health services to the local community, including emergency and primary care, low cost dentistry and laboratory services, internal surgeries in certain trauma cases, and ambulance service to the nearest hospital when more advanced medical attention is needed. Our medical volunteer program is full of excellent opportunities to practice and learn in a 'hands on' experience abroad, even if you are still in school.

Dear friends of the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic,

Happy March! We hope that this update finds you well and enjoying good health and fortune in 2012! It seems that spring is just around the corner for us here in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. (perhaps a bit earlier than Mother Nature intended), and Nicaragua continues to enjoy beautiful weather. As always, we are thrilled to share news from the Clinic with you, as well as show the profound impact that your support has on our organization, and more importantly, on the people we serve.

Health Care Fair
Our annual Health Care Fair ("Feria de Salud") took place on February 4 and went extremely well. Nearly 1,200 residents from surrounding communities received free healthcare from our clinic! This number far surpassed last year's attendance, as well as the expected turn out for this year. Patients received free check-ups from over 20 medical professionals from Nicaragua and the United States who volunteered their services.

While many parents patiently waited to see a doctor, children joyously participated in games that earned them various prizes, including toothpaste, toothbrushes, toys, and popsicles. The fair provided free services in dentistry, optometry, primary care, as well as lessons on preventative care. A highlight of this year's fair was the optometric services that were provided. Approximately 300 people walked away with a free, brand new pair of glasses, and many more got free medicines donated by our sponsors.

ultrasound machine

Furthermore, this year, we were able to use our newly purchased portable ultrasound machine at the Health Care Fair! Thanks to your donations, we were able to obtain this top-of-the-line equipment.

We were delighted to be able to provide this service to numerous patients, and this machine is currently the only ultrasound in the region. The Rivas hospital team will travel with their cardiologist and a list of patients to diagnose patients. Consequently, it will continue to serve as a major game-changer in the community, not only to ensure healthy pregnancies, but also to serve as an essential tool for detecting internal injuries and diagnosing diseases.

Our Medical Advisor, Barbara Jordan, was in charge of bringing the machine to the clinic and training our local staff on how to use it. The machine has three different Dopplers: one for OB/GYN procedures and check-ups, one that is built for abdominal evaluations of internal organs, and one that performs cardiovascular ultrasounds.

Some of our accomplishments in 2011 were having the honor of partnering with TOMS One for One™.

We distributed thousands of TOMS Shoes to children in need. The children received the shoes with excitement, eager to wear and boast their new pair of shoes at school. To read more about our partnership with TOMS, refer to the following link: http://www.nicaclinic.org/nica-media/press-releases/99-toms-shoes-in-nicaragua

And finally, school started this past month in Nicaragua! Through our Programa el Padrino, many gracious donors sponsor individual children, providing for their basic health and educational needs. Our commitment is to provide uniforms, notebooks, and other necessary items for each child in the program.

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan 31, 2012 -  Hundreds of residents who live in the remote communities of southwest Nicaragua will receive free healthcare at the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic’s Annual Health Care Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, in Limon 1 Tola, Rivas, Nicaragua.

A team of more than 30 medical professionals from Nicaragua and the United States are volunteering their services to provide health check ups, preventive medical care, eye and dental exams and other screenings for the men, women and children that the clinic serves.

The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic provides free and low-cost health services to the local community, including emergency and primary care, low cost dentistry and laboratory services, internal surgeries in certain trauma cases, and ambulance service to the nearest hospital when more advanced medical attention is needed. Last year, the clinic began holding on-call hours, allowing patients to have access to medical care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The clinic is expecting double the number of participants from last year, so donations to help fund this event are welcome and much appreciated. The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic relies on the generous donations of individuals and organizations to continue to provide emergency and primary care. In addition, the clinic’s volunteer program connects medical, student and other volunteers with hands-on opportunities to work with patients. And the Padrino Program allows participants to sponsor a child by making monthly donations to fund his/her health care and educational needs.

For more information about this event, please contact Juan Munoz (USA) at jmunoz @ nicaclinic.org or Juan Vargas (Nicaragua) at jvargas @ nicaclinic.org. To learn more about the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic, visit http://www.nicaclinic.org.

Roberto Clemente Health Clinic Brings TOMS Shoes to Children in Need in Nicaragua

Thousands of children in need who live in the remote communities of southwest Nicaragua are receiving new shoes this week, thanks to TOMS and TOMS Giving Partner Roberto Clemente Health Clinic. Through TOMS One for One™ business model, TOMS gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need, with every pair of shoes purchased.

The Roberto Clemente Clinic (http://nicaclinic.org) staff traveled to more than 50 schools in 27 communities in late July and early August to give TOMS Shoes to students of all ages from elementary through high school. Many of the children who live in the isolated villages of Limon and surrounding communities walk long distances on dirt roads to get to school and can’t afford to buy new shoes.

“We are so thankful for these shoes, which are a fundamental resource for protecting children from rough terrain, infection and diseases,” said Juan Muñoz, Executive Director of the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic. “Children who are healthy are more likely to be successful students, and we know that access to education is critical to their long-term success.”

Giving TOMS Shoes is just one of the ways Nicaclinic is working to improve the health of residents who live along the rugged Pacific coastline in southwest Nicaragua. In addition to supplying free and low-cost medical care to more than 10,000 patients each year, the clinic strives to educate the community about better health, as well as prevent diseases, cure viruses and treat injuries and chronic health problems that are endemic to this part of the world, where running water and flushing toilets are still quite rare.

Nicaclinic relies on the generous donations of individuals and organizations to continue to provide emergency and primary care. The clinic’s volunteer program connects medical, student and other volunteers with hands-on opportunities to work with patients and members of the community. And the Padrino Program allows participants to sponsor a child and make a monthly donation to their health and educational needs.
