Meet the people who make this project a reality

Our team is composed of the board of directors, an executive director in the US, who oversees all aspects of our organization, and our local team (doctors, nurses, administrative staff). Additionally, we have a group of medical advisers, smart interns and wonderful volunteers that come each month to our clinic. You can volunteer overseas in Nicaragua and gain a great experience. Our Volunteer Program in Nicaragua is extremely fun and productive, and you do not necessarily need to be in the healthcare industry. We welcome anybody, especially those who want to have an international volunteer experience and contribute to a humanitarian cause.

Barbara Jordan

She is a board certified Physician Assistant and has been practicing medicine for over twenty years. She attended undergraduate school at Berkshire College in Massachusetts and Goddard College in Vermont, with degrees in liberal arts and health sciences. She attended Stanford University Medical Center's Primary Care Associate Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Program, graduating in 1991.

As a new graduate, she joined the team at San Jose Medical Center, helping to bring full primary care services, including prenatal care, to high-school based clinics in East San Jose. For ten years she was part of the faculty for the San Jose Medical Center's residency program at the hospital, teaching women's health to medical residents, as well as working in private practice with Family Practice Medical Associates.

She has also trained and worked as a midwife with Matera Birth Center in Mountain View, California, and has interned with midwives on the Texas/Mexico border near Juarez, Mexico. For the past nine years she has been on the team at A Women's Center in Campbell, California, consisting of two board certified Obstetricians/Gynecologists, and three Physician Assistants, offering women's health and primary care to all age groups.

Her real passion is medical volunteering in underserved areas. She has traveled to Mexico with "Flying Samaritans", giving primary care and OB/GYN services to small fishing villages along the coast of the Baja Peninsula, as well as to Haiti with an Emergency Medicine group from Redding, California.  Most recently she has found her "home away from home" at The Roberto Clemente Clinic in Nicaragua.

In her spare time Barbara enjoys cooking, spending time with her three children and two dogs, horseback riding, hiking, dancing, and growing tomatoes for her "award winning" pico de gallo.  She is currently working towards a master's degree in Health Arts and Sciences with an emphasis on health education.

Susan W. Burriss - BSN, MS

She is a proven strategic leader in an international matrix pharmaceutical/biotech environment.  Currently, she is a Senior Director in Medical Affairs for Human Genome Sciences responsible for strategic initiatives and operations management.  Prior to her current position she was with Wyeth Research/Laboratories.  While at Wyeth, Ms. Burriss developed and managed several pediatric, cardiovascular and women’s health international clinical trials.  In addition she created a unique group within Global Medical Affairs, which provided scientific and operational leadership to eleven Asia Pacific and five Latin American Medical Affiliate offices.

Ms. Burriss has more than 25 years of pediatric/neonatal and family practice nursing experience.  Her academic achievements include a Master of Science in Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs from Temple University’s School of Pharmacy and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from DePauw University.

Aside from Susan’s career focus, she has a strong commitment to outreach.  Early in her nursing career she was a volunteer nurse with the Institute of Cultural Affairs in Azpitia, Peru.  She was the principal sponsor for the resettlement of Kosovo refugee families and a Peruvian family to the greater Philadelphia area.  More recently, she was a nurse volunteer for a community health clinic dedicated to providing free medical care for the working poor in Pennsylvania. In early 2010 she built an observational database for rural health clinics in Kenya and joined the board of Decent Life Volunteers. Ms. Burriss participates annually in international medical volunteer opportunities in Latin America.

I'm 25, from San Jose, CA, and currently work as an Aid in the radiology department of Good Samaritan Hospital. In the past I have had many volunteer experiences, including assisting teachers at the Urban Corps in San Diego, CA. I have traveled to 4 different Spanish speaking countries, including two separate trips each to Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

My trips to Nicaragua while volunteering with the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic have been amazing. In total, I have visited Nicaragua and volunteered with the clinic for 6 weeks. While there, I have done diabetes outreach in local communities, visited elementary schools, assisted with a Tom's Shoes giveaway to local kids, and shadowed the clinic staff. I've also enjoyed surfing and spending time at the beaches.

A powerful moment in my travels happened during this past trip at an educational meeting with local diabetics. Another volunteer and I met with around 30 diabetics in Virgen Morena, a local community near the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic. Here we gave an informational talk about diabetes and provided glucometers and test strips to 6 different communities. This will enable them to test their blood sugar levels if symptoms arise. We also provided different educational materials for them to share with others in their communities.

The powerful moment came at the end of the meeting when one of the community members explained how she kept asking the clinic when these supplies were coming. The nurse at the clinic had to keep telling her to wait because we were coming in April. This made me feel like we really made a difference there. It was also a quick reminder that there is a significant need for health care outreach in rural Nicaragua. Given a bit of help, I made a small difference this time… So can anyone else.

Jenia Hooper, our new Director of Volunteer and Outreach Programs, main focus is to work with students and medical professionals who are interested in offering their time and knowledge to not only the local clinic staff but also the community. In doing so, volunteers are able to gain clinical experience, interact with local community members, and learn a new culture and hopefully a new language. She also runs one of our local programs, which use donations from individuals to sponsor a child in the community in order to provide them with educational opportunities as well as daily healthcare.

Originally from Baltimore, MD she studied mathematics and sociology at Boston University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2008. During college she studied abroad in South Africa, volunteered with numerous organizations where she worked as a mentor, coach, and tutor, and interned at Boston Mobilization developing and implementing curriculums.  After graduation she moved to Denver, CO where she worked in the finance department for a local non-profit organization. Upon finishing her contract with Work for Progress she started her application for the Peace Corps. In 2010, she received her nomination and subsequent acceptance to start her service in Guatemala. From 2010 to 2012 she served as a youth development volunteer in San Cristobal, Alta Verapaz where she implemented and monitored a life skills and health education program in four local schools. Once her service had ended, she remained in Guatemala and worked with a local NGO, managing large groups of American University students in their Guatemalan internship program. In her final months in Guatemala she also taught English to elementary school children. She plans to one day return to school and receive a master in international public health and social work.
